While performing at the World Trade Center's first summer
series, ABC News came to film my performance· At the exact
moment that they started to film, a huge Con Edison blackout
occurred. People were stranded in buildings, elevators, etc.
Needless to say I never made the news. ABC decided to film
anyway... One small problem. Except for the drums, all the
instruments were electronic... They had people gather around
and react as I sang with just drum accompaniment. Ah, show
business!!!!
One evening I walk into my dressing room to change into my
gown and find my dressy heels gone... That night I performed
in front of 5,000 people in a beautiful Tony Chase gown and
work boots.
I used to open with a song by Bruce Roberts called, "I'm
Coming Home Again". It's a beautiful song with a recurring
chorus that changes keys each time the chorus Is repeated...
Wellllll, one night the orchestra turned an extra page. They
were in the right spot but in the wrong key and needless to
say, I was literally singing 1/2 step below them.
Ouch!!!!!!
One evening, not being able to find the right bra to wear
under this plunging neckline dress that I had bought... I
found some Velcro and velcroed my breasts to the inside of the
dress...I also put on pasties like strippers used to wear, but
I put them on wrong and they were showing. I didn't know what
to do. I knew there would be people who would see this and be
commenting to each other about it. (I know I would). So, after
the first number, I told them about everything. Yes. I bared
it all...literally!!!! It made everyone comfortable,
especially me; and then ----- on with the show!!!!!!
My first job in show business was to be the opening act for
Rodney Dangerfield. This was a big moment for me. (and for my
mom, as you will see later). Okay, now picture this - it's
opening night, I've just done my very first show ever in show
business. The audience bursts into applause and my mom... so
excited that her first born is following her dream, jumps up
in the middle of the audience wildly clapping and exclaiming,
"Wasn't she just wonderful. Let's hear it for her!!!!!!!!" (
it still brings a smile to my face! )
Okay, another, picture this....it's the Charles Grodin Show.
I've just finished this rather sophisticated song that I've
chosen to sing on nationwide TV; a show that was repeated at
least six times that week I might mention. Charles walks up to
the piano to speak to me for a few moments. I glance at the
monitor to see scrolling up as conversation that I have this
unusual talent - I am able to touch my nose with my tongue and
also swallow it. Somehow he had found out about this and now, thoroughly
mortified, he was asking me to do this for the
camera. I did!!!! It was definitely a moment!
And finally, my favorite story to date---I've just done
about six numbers in my show, I'm rather warm and thirsty so
while talking to the audience about whatever pops into my mind
I slowly sashay back to the stool that so nicely has a towel
and water waiting for me. I promptly wipe myself off, pick up
the glass of water, drink down a rather large amount of it and
proceed to put the glass down on the stool. As I do this, I
guess the water hadn't traveled down fast enough and it
proceeds to come back up and through my nostrils leaving the
hugest puddle you have ever seen on the floor (I am still
leaning over), I slowly turn my head to the audience and say,
"You didn't see that did you?" And from the lighting booth,
all the way in the back I hear "you'd have to be Ray Charles
not to have seen that!!!!!!!!!"
