"Karen
Saunders has reached that rare place at which true artistry, emotional honesty,
and rare sensitivity combine"
BackStage "...when Karen Saunders stepped to the mike and let out
all the stops, I made a note: There is a voice. She rides a song like a brilliant,
enthusiastic bicyclist, uphill, down dale, deep and slow, hot and fast, joyous,
conspiratorial, deadly serious, wickedly funny, but always -- always -- with
the fullest intelligence. Or, if you like, a high, exciting, concentration.
Oh, my."
New York Post "Karen Saunders is more than a singer; she is a stylist.
She gives every song a distinct and distinctive point of view, both musically
and lyrically , making each a special experience. Ranging from a rich, husky
low, through caressing purity, to all out belt, the versatility of her voice
as an instrument serves the broad scope of her stylistic vocabulary. But her
interpretive effectiveness stems also from the way she approaches her material
physically and from the intelligence of her vision. Upon reflection, I think
I got it wrong. Karen Saunders is more than a stylist. She is an artist."
BackStage "Brings down the house."
The Week On Stage "Absolute conviction, impressive power."
Bergen Record Karen's First Review
I had performed at the the Trouper's dinner honoring Mickey Rooney at the Waldorf
Astoria. I was only in the business a few months when I was given an award for
being an outstanding newcomer. The award came from the Theatre of Renewal. Swoosie
Kurtz and a few other people received awards for plays that they were appearing
in. My first review came out and it went as follows (it was as if my mom had
written it!!!) Fabulous Trooper's Showtime by
Norman Charles
...finally, there was an unusual singer on the show named Karen Saunders. Do
remember the name, for unless I miss my guess, Ms. Saunders has the makings
of not only stardom, but eventual superstardom, if guided properly. She is a
singer like unto no other, in all difference to Streisand, and her contemporaries
Budd, Oliver, Bassey, Warwick, Midler, etc. The thing that makes Karen Saunders
so different and unique is the fact that unlike most singers, She doesn't try
to ape a Streisand or a Midler. She gives you the dramatic purity of herself,
and with it, unexpectedly comes a refreshingly theatrical surge that is at once
recognizable and inescapably mesmerizing. Saunders is truly an unpretentious,
down-to-earth person, who looks like she might be anyone's favorite sister,
or friend. And make no mistake about this kind of genuine image, for I believe
it bears the ever sacred mark of life's richest gift to mankind--the truth.
Bravo and Bravo again to the charismatic presence and inevitable ascendancy
of Karen Saunders. Needless to say I was blown away and very flattered
by this review.... What a way to start. First, opening for Rodney Dangerfield
and then, getting this review!!!!!!! It was definitely the fodder needed to
continue. I knew I was on the right track!!!!!!! Page
